TRAININGS AND WORKSHOPS

In addition to lectures and multimedia presentations, Jackson Katz and associates conduct full or half-day workshops for college administrators, faculty, and staff; high school educators; sexual assault and domestic violence program staff; health-care professionals; law enforcement personnel; and others.

These workshops can be customized to the needs of various groups. In some cases, elements of each can be combined.

More Than a Few Good Men: Strategies for Inspiring Men and Boys to be Allies in Gender Violence Prevention

In this full or half-day workshop, participants are introduced to a creative new way of conceptualizing men's role in what historically have been considered "women's issues." With a combination of lecture, written and oral exercises, and interactive discussion, Katz and his colleagues present the philosophy behind and the practical application of the MVP Model, a gender violence prevention education strategy he and his racially diverse, mixed-gender staff first developed in 1993 at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society.

This workshop will enhance participants' understanding of why few men to date have become actively involved in gender violence prevention efforts. It will also provide them with concrete strategies to involve men (and boys) as allies in this critical work. Topics include but are not limited to the role of media in shaping gendered behavior; the need to rethink language used to talk about violence; dynamics of male peer culture that keep many men silent in the face of their peers' abusive behavior; issues of racial and ethnic diversity; and the role of adult male leadership.

Katz also shares lessons learned from his and his colleagues' gender violence prevention work over the past decade in the college and professional sports culture, the U.S. military, as well as with numerous high schools and middle schools.

Teaching Tough Guise

This full or half-day workshop is designed for educators, media literacy specialists, and others who have used or plan to use Katz's award-winning educational video, Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity. (The video has versions for college and high school students. The workshop is customized for teaching either one or both versions.)

Using film clips from Tough Guise, up-to-date slides with images from popular culture, lecture format and interactive discussion, Katz offers useful tips for introducing students and professionals to a cutting-edge approach to reading media images critically – especially those connected with masculinities and violence.
